Taxi Pricing and Flat Rates
Many people that have ridden with various taxi services in different cities have encountered the notion of a flat rate fare sometime in the past. This means that instead of having a meter which runs the entire time that you are in the cab, if you are traveling between two commonly travelled destinations the taxi driver will instead charge you a flat rate which has been predetermined by the company. Commonly, this is the sort of payment structure that is seen when traveling between the airport and certain destinations or from points all over a city to the airport, as airports are probably the one destination most commonly found at one end or the other of a taxi ride.
This leads to people wondering if there are flat rates for other rides that they might take in a taxi outside of just to or from an airport. The truth is that this is the case in some cities. Some cities have required that taxi companies install a flat rate system for major trips between certain parts of the cities, and in other locations, taxi companies themselves have decided that this is a better way to do business. Still, there are other places you might travel to where you will find that every cab ride is still a mattered one.
After the airport, the downtown center of every city is probably the location which is most commonly traveled to or from during a trip with a taxi. What many wonder about is if there are going to be flat rates between that downtown center, and the various suburbs in a large city like L.A, Chicago, or Toronto. This is sometimes available to you, and if taxis have a flat rates system, they will in most cases have it posted somewhere in the cab though.
One thing to remain aware of is that the flat rate may only carry you to the downtown of the suburb that you are traveling to. Therefore, if you want to travel to a residential area on the outskirts of the suburb, you may end up paying more than the flat rate. If the driver has to travel further than is included within the flat rate, they may start the meter running at a certain point in the ride and add that to the total that you already owed for the larger part of the journey.
